“In those days there was no king in Israel; and every
man did what was right in his own eyes.”
This is perhaps the key verse to the entire book of Judges.
Even after all God had done for the nation of Israel, they
did not see nor worship Yahweh as their king. Like a bad
television rerun, the Book of Judges exposes the downward
spiral of a culture that had turned its back on God. It
unveils cycles of increasing depravity in which the sins
of the culture became the sins of God’s people. Even
as wicked as Israel was, God was gracious and raised up
Judges to save them.
In
the book of Judges, God has given us stories, whereby we
may learn what occurs when God is not submitted to as king
and man is ruled by their own intentions and desires. We
learn first-hand, the truth of Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness
exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”
Yet even through the darkness of Israel’s faithlessness;
the light of God’s faithfulness shines.
So
join us Wednesday nights at 6:30pm as we study the Old Testament
Book of Judges.
